What does P0017 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B) mean?

P0017 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that refers to the correlation between the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) and camshaft position sensor (CMP) on bank 1 sensor B of an OBD-II equipped vehicle.

These sensors work together to control spark and fuel delivery, as well as timing.

The crankshaft sensor detects the position of the crankshaft and relays that information to the PCM or ignition module, while the camshaft position sensor detects the position of the camshafts and relays that information to the PCM.

The PCM uses the camshaft position signal to identify the beginning of the injector sequence.

The timing belt or chain connects these two shafts and their sensors, and if the PCM detects that the signals are out of sync, this DTC will be triggered.

It is important to note that this code is common in conjunction with other codes such as P0008, P0009, P0016, P0018, and P0019.

P0017 Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Engine cranking but not starting
  • Rattling noise near harmonic balancer

Possible P0017 Causes

  • Timing chain stretched or timing belt skipped a tooth
  • Misalignment of timing belt/chain
  • Slipped or broken tone ring on crankshaft or camshaft
  • Faulty crank sensor or cam sensor
  • Damaged wiring to crank/cam sensor
  • Damaged timing belt/chain tensioner
  • Improperly torqued crankshaft balancer
  • Mis-built or mis-timed engine
  • Loose or missing crankshaft balancer bolt
  • Stuck CMP actuator solenoid
  • CMP actuator stuck in a position other than degrees

Troubleshooting P0017 error code

  1. Visually inspect cam and crank sensors and their harnesses for damage
  2. Check cam and crank patterns using a scope
  3. Inspect tone rings for proper alignment and damage
  4. Replace sensor if properly installed tone rings
  5. Check timing chain/belt for proper alignment
  6. Inspect tensioner for damage and check if chain/belt is stretched
  7. Repair and recheck
